Brubey (Wanzhi) Hu (b. 1994) is a current MFA candidate in Studio Art at University of Waterloo. She holds Bachelor of Fine Arts from Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) with major in General Fine Arts and concentrations in Graphic Design and Book Arts. Hu works mostly with but not limited to painting, with interests in Architecture, Dualism, and color theory. Through subtractive simplification, her work transcends flat images or physical objects to document introspective moments. In addition to the paintings themselves, she has collected tapes and contact sheets that she uses to mask out the area for paint. Originally born in Xiamen China, she moved to Vancouver Canada in 2011 for high school, and then to the United States for undergrad. Hu’s work has been exhibited in Baltimore MD, Miami FL, and Cleveland OH. In 2018, Hu participated in BAiR Emerging Visual and Digital Arts Residency at Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. Recently, Hu is one of the finalists of Untapped Emerging Artist Competition at The Artist Project 2019.
